This type of scenery is a relic....representing the end of an era of painted backings in movies and TV. A few more will be produced, I imagine. But the days when every major movie had at least a couple of backings are over.
So many backings came through the shop at Warner Bros. that I don't remember the movie titles associated with many of these shots. Some of these may represent backings I photographed but did not actually work on. It's hard to distinguish one backing from another sometimes. For the most part, these are jobs on which I did a significant amount of painting. Typically, large architectural paintings involved the most people--often 5 or 6 artists working over a few weeks. Smaller jobs, and landscapes (which require much less drawing) were often completed by one or two artists.
One production,"Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events", was created in 2004. The WarnerBros. scenic art department painted miles of backings surrounding multiple sets on sound stages around Los Angeles for this show. I think of this production as a swan song for the painted backing. Photos of this work are on a separate page. More backings are here.
